Art of ICD-10 Coding - Basic Concepts for Beginning Coders

Description: Each year, diagnostic coding accuracy plays a greater role in quality reporting, risk adjustment and payment. A good foundation for ICD-10 coding accuracy is learning the fundamentals of translating medical terminology into coding language. The Art of ICD-10-CM Coding: Basic Concepts for Beginning Coders is a one-day, highly interactive workshop for novice coders who have not had formal coding training. National coding expert Sparkle Sparks, PT, MPT, COS-C, will discuss the essential basics for the most accurate application of diagnosis codes.
Workshop topics:
- Translate medical terminology into coding language
- Understand coding terminology, conventions and general coding guidelines
- Simple steps for finding a diagnosis code
- Selection of diagnoses and codes for relevant OASIS items
- Selection and sequencing criteria for primary and secondary diagnoses
Please note: a current ICD-10-CM Coding Manual is required for class participation. Also, all participants are required to read pages 8-18 of the ICD-10-CM Official Guidelines for Coding and Reporting for 2018 (https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/icd/10cmguidelines_fy2018_final.pdf) prior to the workshop.
Upon completion of the workshop, attendees will receive 6.5 nursing CEs and 6.5 continuing education units from the Board of Medical Specialty Coding and Compliance. Cancellation Policy: PHA will provide a credit in place of any cancelled session, event or product that has been paid for in advance. The credit may go toward any session, event or product to be used within a one-year period from the date of cancellation. The amount of the credit will be minus 25% of the cost of the original purchase price. No credit will be given for no-shows or for cancellations within three weeks of the session.
